The app is great but is there a way to restudy a fully learned list? I'll change the rating if answered

It kept begging me to rate it so here I go. The app sucks compared to the iPhone one from what I've seen. Crashes often and just isn't a good UI.

Constantly bugs you to review the damn thing even when you've paid for it and told it to "never" ask you again. Other than that, it's literally the same as every other JDIC dictionary, which is to say it's passable for looking up the occasional definition, but nothing special and certainly not a serious study tool. If that's all you're looking for, Takoboto is better even without paying for it. Not only does it not incessantly bother you with pop-ups asking for a review, it also has a better-designed interface.

It's very complete and practical, and the offline feature is the best for studying on the go (or at least to kill time). But, it has a bug that makes it crash almost every time I open it, forcing me to open it twice. If this bug gets fixed, I think this app will be unbeatable when it comes to Japanese-English dictionaries.

The dictionary and kanji look up functions work well. I wish the kanji stroke order displayed as nicely as the Apple version of the app.

I love this app on iPhone, but why is the android version so bad? It has so many ads that I have to wait for ads to load before it searches my word. It doesnt have a purchase option in the app store but a dubious in app signal to "GO AD FREE" When I put my phone on airplane mode the app works just fine!! I am willing to purchase this app just so I dont have to struggle anymore; is there an official purchase option? I'm truly disappointed, however this app is such a winner in terms of features.

Not as good as the iPhone version, but still my favorite Japanese study app. I love the convenience of adding any word I look up to the study list. Complaints: I miss the feature in the iPhone version that would add all kanji in a word to my study list. I upgraded, but when I changed phones, the upgrade was lost and I'm now getting ads again. The app prompts me to leave a review every time I open it, and closes if I don't.

Solid app. Very useful. Used this for years. Good when I was a beginner and even now that I do freelance Japanese translation on the side.

PRO: Very complete dictionary, with a lot of info (e.g. example words and sentences for each kanji). The list system is very intuitive and lets you organize the kanji as you learn them and add personal annotations. Nice flashcard system. CON: It would be nice if one could copy/paste multiple kanji at the same time, and there should be a warning message before you delete a kanji from a list. Importantly, the app lacks the possibility to export your lists between devices.

A concise app that does everything you need it to. The study function can be a bit finicky at times in terms of changing settings, but the dictionary is great with a good number of example sentences to show context

It's an incredibly useful app and I use it every day. Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be any way to back up or transfer the lists/flashcards you make with it, so bear that in mind. I've been using it daily for months and now that I'm getting a new phone, I inevitably have to lose all that data. It'd be a pretty useful feature, but aside from that, I highly recommend the app!

I had this app on my iPhone and the iOS version of it is 5!/5. The Android version is underwhelming, I'm really disappointed. Not to mention that I could not find a way to sync my old lists onto my new phone..

Used this app on iOS 10 years ago and thought it was the best app ever. It crashes sometime on two Android phones that I have, but is otherwise fast and responsive. Over the years, other apps came to do what this app can and more (wildcard, accent etc.). Pretty sure ads got bigger too. But main reason for the 1* is no export function! I am now wasting time typing over 1000 words into a new phone and switching to Takoboto so I never have to do this again. 3* otherwise. Dev do not reply to email.

On iOS, this is a wonderful app. On Android, it's absolute trash. Ads, ads, ads and so much missing content. It's a real shame. Tako is the best dictionary for Android.

Best for flashcards. Occasionally doesn't have a word or phrase, doesn't have a good English meaning written with it, and very often doesn't have example sentences. But just for grinding out study flashcards it's great.

Great offline tool with quality sources. The interface can be surprisingly buggy and clunky though. Why can't I copy the word from a page? Why are the alternate versions of a word so small, and why can't I click to enlarge them? The furigana above alternates are so ludicrously small it seems like a cruel joke sometimes. Why is する lacking the conjugation table? There aren't many irregular verbs, and those need such a table most of all! Why can't I export my lists so they don't disappear?

The app usually crashes the first time I open it, and the search doesn't always work. This is frustrating and I'm now back to using my previous dictionary app, which is a shame as I like using the list functionality.

Search only returns live results from the top search screen, on other screens you have to hit enter. Search results truncated making it hard to browse for the right word if you only know one kanji. Study timing algorithm is poor, intervals are nonsensical (10 seconds followed by one day) and reviews are clumpy (30% of all words due on a single day). Can't hide English when studying. The list I spent years studying didn't transfer to my new phone, backup feature missing. Wasted effort.

I think that de app is almost perfect. The only problem, that's quite important to me, is that you can't practice anymore words that appear as Learned, and for that reason I can't use this app anymore. Also I don't remember the meaning of most of the words in learned, and it's a deal breaker not to be able to practice them anymore

A perfect 10/10 app for old and new learners alike. The search feature is brilliant. All the study material is bifurcated for JLPT proficiency tests as well. If you have a phone with less storage, you can even back up the app's program files to your SD card. All in all, it's a 10/10 as I said before.

EDIT: I find it frustrating not to be able to add words that are missing/misplaced. I was looking for the verb "to say" and I couldn't get "iu" anywhere. Only by searching for "to declare" the verb comes up. I really like this app and the good integration between dictionary and flashcards, but these imperfections always push me looking for other apps that do the same things but better

I'd love to be able to nest folders or lists into other folders. Also, it'd be great if the Kanji section in References included Kanji by JLPT level and not only by Grade. But overall, it is a useful app for people learning Japanese.

The app is really good. Especially if you are already familiar with Hiragana and Katakana. It also provides a way if researching Kanji that you don't know, bc you can't just type the Kanji in if you don't know it obviously. The collected vocabulary is enormous and they cover every possible translation for each word. I love it! I've been using it all throughout my exchange year in Japan.

This is a really, really good app, but quite frankly, this version of the app is inferior in many ways to the apple version of this app. This one doesn't have the draw to search for kanji function, which is extremely limiting and required me to download a separate app. The other version allowed to search for multiple words in the search bar at the same time (like copy pasting a whole sentence) and the results would show each word in order. This one only allows searching for one word at a time.

Solid, quite like how many examples and different compounds it provides for kanji. Loses a star though for not being able to easily copy and paste the search results. Slightly annoying when trying to look up kanji for a word where the kanji is only noted in the other ways to write it section.

Completely different from iPhone version. This app is great on iOS. On Android, not only are there obnoxious ads, many features are missing. You cannot search multiple words in a sentence simultaneously (only "begins" or "ends"), you cannot click on the kanji in alternate spellings of words, you cannot click on words during study to open the dictionary entry... I'm sure there are many other missing features I haven't noticed yet. PLEASE IMPROVE THIS APP FOR ANDROID!!!

Great! But it doesn't have the writing option like the apple version which was really helpful for me and I relied on it for a number of years. I hope there is hope in the future for this feature to come over to the android version. I'm completely loyal so I'll use it anyhow. Hehe

I posted a really rude comment ( I have already deleted it ) and I'd like to apologize. The app is not as good as its iPhone counterpart but its very far from bad. After commenting said comment, I used it continuously and found it to be useful and enjoyable. Moreover, this is the only app that offers this kind of features for free! Unfortunately, I cannot donate myself due to several reasons but I would encourage users to donate to the developer so that the app may become better.

I really liked this app on my iPhone. I now have an android and it just doesn't work properly and has adverts? It's not letting me add words to my lists and has an annoying "begins" and "ends" thing in the search. Really bugging me because I want to use the app as I was before the phone change. The app is very good and useful, the best out there that I have been able to find, but there is no way to save your lists and what you have studied between devices. Meaning you could use this app for a year on one phone, then that phone could stop working or die and when you get a new phone you would have lost all your lists and everything that you studied and saved. You need some kind of account to save your lists and progress to. Like a Google account or something.

It used to be the best app for japanese ever (I lived with this app from 2013 to 2018 while studying japanese in university!), but now it's just useless and it's so sad... Can't write kanji with my finger any longer, it won't find words, you can't paste phrases. I don't know what happened, but it's just not useable anymore.

A very useful app, the ability to add words with the meaning to a list and easily review is great. But it is often slow on startup, which is a big deal when wanting to check something quickly. Also it is sometimes slow to respond when moving between screens in the app itself, a friend who uses the ios version recommended it to me, so if you could only make it smoother I'd give it a 5. And when I close the app it often closes completely and I have to start up the app again and look up the word.

Best dictionary app by far. The only things that would make it better are: -if there was a rating that showed how often a word was used. That way, I wouldn't need to sift through results for good vocab. -if the verbs showed what particles they can take. Overall fantastic job tho

Overall good app. Although there are some things I'd like to critique. In the iOS version you can speed up the incoming Japanese words by swiping, doesn't seem to work on this version. Also tapping some of the words tends to be a difficult task. I could tap for one word and a different word would be selected. The random word wall feature alone made me try this out on Android as my girlfriend also has this app and I was interested. Otherwise very a helpful jishoo.

I really like this app. I wish there was a handwriting function like on the iOS version. The ads are fairly large so it becomes annoying. Shortly after I downloaded this app I was asking my boss how to use a certain word I had pulled up and it was showing dating apps with questionable photos. It was awkward. Overall, it functions well and I learned to ignore the ads.

Really useful! I can keep track of what kanji I've already memorized by coloring them and there are tons and tons of sentences explaining better the meaning and usage of a word. Extremely good dictionary. Although, when I used it on IOS was way better than android, which I don't understand why. Try making it better for android too please. (Less adds n more coloring options, drawing option.)

I used to use this app all the time on my iphone but this version is disappointing compared to the iOS version. There are 2 reasons. The iOS version has an text analyzing feature which I believe is now called "text" where you can past text you've copied (from a website, text, email) and it'll give you the furigana and if you tap the word(s) it'll direct you to a more detailed page about that word. There's no built in drawing feature for kanji. I strongly suggest they add the above features.

Why does the app in iOS look better and have less to minimal ads, while on android the app looks funny? Yeah its relatively easy to use, but there is a visible downside to using this app on android. I'm not sure I like this version... The only thing i like is the fact that it could be used offline, although I'm not sure if could be used for extended periods off line. So far, its okay. The dictionary is much helpful though. Thats a plus...

The same 日本語 app which is used by iphone ios is great but regarding android app it's really disgusting. The area taken by ad is huge and it is somewhat troublesome. And there is no kanji draw tool as iphone app has it. The layout of start screen is far more better n easy to use in iphone app comparing to android app. I hope the developer makes start screen layout of this app same as iphone app layout. If it does, then i think this app will be rated 5 star by all the users.

Coming from using the app on iOS, reviewing words is more glitchy in the app on android. Also, it would be really helpful if I could toggle between light mode and dark mode instead of light mode being for android only and dark mode being for iPhone only. But other than that, the app is perfectly fine, and I'd still recommend it to others that are interested in learning the language.

It's a little confusing at first with all the Kanji floating around on the first screen, but after awhile I liked that it gave me an idea of what I can learn without feeling lost. The Japanese Kanji has the Hiragana above it and it has examples (and dictionary definitions) in both Japanese and English. It's a really good app for studying the words and sentence examples.

Insanely useful! I used takoboto for years, but this app offers a lot more functions for which I switched: search results show everything at once with several example sentences, conjugations (so good for verbs!), kanji meanings. Flashcards for search history and lists are a nice addition. Real downside is not being able to copy the kanji from the results (4 stars due to that). Nice to have would be hand stroke recognition for kanji search.

Horrible version of the app, go use this same exact app on a iPhone and is so smooth with even more functionality and fluidly when quizzing, checking the words definition, then quizzing again on iPhone this is possible but here... abysmal. would rate this hollow shell of an app a absolute zero if not for seeing how amazing it really can be.

The absolute BEST app for learning japanese I ever found on android or iOS. It has a vast database with various lists for learning, With examples for EVERY single kanji and word, stroke orders, and much more. I bought it on iOS in 2008, and I am VERY VERY pleased to see it here on Android as well.

This is one of the best reference materials I've come across. Because it can convert kanji, hiragana, romaji, and English interchangeably, it really helps you to find the word you are looking for. The sample sentences really help with context and see the typical usage of the word. When I was living in Japan, the common phrases helped me to communicate even if I only knew one word. I hope others are able to use it and the vocab keeps expanding as time goes on.

I love the Apple version on my Iphone. I like this android version too but not nearly as much as the Apple version. It feels like stuff is missing but that's not the real problem. The real problem is that the app crashes a lot. Edit: I originally gave 4 stars. Honestly, this is one the most comprehensive japanese dictionaries out there. Instead of having to download 3 different dictionary apps for each purpose (like one for kanji, one for vocab, and one for something like gradewise grammar etc) , this app combines almost every thing you could possibly need. Been using this one app to learn japanese since 4th grade. The best out there in my opinion.

good dictionary, occasionally crashes and could use some quality of life changes to the interface (such as being able to tap and hold a new word and get options like adding it to a list or removing). Or maybe being able to share lists with other users possibly

I LOVE this app and use it constantly, but the Android version is quite inferior to the Apple version I used to have when I had an iPhone. Please please update the Android version to include all the features available on your Apple version of this app and I will gladly change my rating to 5 stars.

EDIT: THIS APP IS NOT AS GOOD AS THE IOS VERSION. WHY NOT! The best Japanese dictionary there is on android. Missing some obvious functions like hyperlink from examples, and ability to pause flash sets, modify flash set repetition rates, built in handwriting; the examples could do with expansion. But ultimately very useful

I've had this app for many years and was always my favourite and to go dictionary but the differences between the android and iOS versions are totally disappointing. The most useful feature for me is the hand writing kanji recognition which is great on iOS but not even an option for android. Sad to have to let this app go.

I tried a lot of different Japanese apps for dictionary. This one is really great. I can type a word in English or Japanese in the search and it'll find it, very simple to use. Most dictionaries only go one way or the other and they're not intuitive. 見つけ良かった!

The iOS version seems to be better with more relevant information for those taking JLPT. JLPT level for a word is called out. Also there seems to be some words missing from android version.

As other users have stated, the iPhone version is wonderful. The Android version is glitchy and I often have to force close to search new words. Word entry has to be an exact match or else search results will not display. I contacted the Renzo team to see if there was any way to port my data from my iPhone (hundreds of lists and thousands of notes), and that was a month ago. THEY NEVER GOT BACK TO ME. Disappointed I'll have to keep my iPhone handy just to use the wonderful Japanese app.

Would give this app 5 stars if there wasnt so many things missing from the apple version. Apparently there should be the ability to hand draw kanji to look them up? Not in this version. I have to use the google translate app which has this option available. I mainly use this app for looking up words and then adding them to a list to study later. It would be great if the option to go to the dictionary entry from the study card was available. These are my main concerns now. Will update if changed.

I used this application a long time ago on iPad and I was struck by the qualify of the UI. I was very happy to see the same UI here but then I found out that most of the functionalities are not available on Android, as if this version is just an afterthought. I am referring especially to the import/export functions for the lists, which are fully described on the website but then are nowhere to be found on the Android app. The app also lacks support for a dark theme, but that's a minor issue.

The best Japanese app for the serious learner, hands down. The dictionary is excellent, navigation is easy, and there are so many example sentences that you really do not need anything else other than someone to speak Japanese with. I already had some Japanese reading ability when i got this, FYI. I use this app daily to improve my vocabulary and look up new words I hear and see while I'm in Japan. Please re-enable clicking on words in example sentences for 5-stars!

If you want five stars from me I need the following things: 1-Exportable lists. (Preferably to anki, but I at least need a backup file like the itunes version). 2-The ability to jump back and forth between the dictionary entry and the flashcard when studying flashcards (again, available in the itunes version). Come on guys, you are better than this!

Best Japanese dictionary app out there, and ive tried most of them. you can save words in separate folders, and study them later in the app as flashcards! it was kanji by radical which is very useful, or you can even draw it. you can type english, Japanese, or romaji to find what you're looking for. offers conjugations and example sentences, as well as kanji analysis, and alternate readings. overall Excellent app. Would highly recommend!

I found the iOS version to be more feature rich and would give this 5 stars if it were equivalent. For example, I am not able to migrate lists between Android devices with an export function that existed in the iOS version. If there is a way, no documentation exists. The app does crash at times when switching focus between other apps.

This was an amazing resource when I bought it five+ years ago. Now, I hardly touch it. It crashes frequently for me, isn't as flexible as it used to be (I can't give it a sentence, I need to break it down to single words now) and even though I bought the app back in the day, I seem to be out of the ad free club again. I still use it from time to time but honestly Google translate is often more useful.

too much disparity between version iOS and Android and what for? frankly,i don't see why you cannot have the same release date for both platform. I'm not planning to go back to Apple so I'll seek a better dictionary in the meantime one that is actually developed.in that's case why not use flutter or another framework that allow to dev for both platform without having to have downtime coding

the app changed from when i first downloaded it. a person used to be able to continually go down a rabbit hole and click on words in the example sentences to learn new words. now the app doesn't let you discover new words or content. This app is incredibly useful for looking up the meaning of words and specific kanji. I almost love it. My one gripe is that the stroke order on Android is wayyy worse than on iOS. The iOS version has a nice and neat stroke order lesson that helps you write it correctly. The Android version has intentionally messy handwriting, which makes you learn how to write the kanji incorrectly! I don't understand why they're this different or why the developers thought this was okay.

My favorite Japanese dictionary on iPhone but on Android this app is an unpolished mess. (A perfect example being the stroke order gifs. On iPhone they look wonderful, Android looks like a 3 year olds drawing) Your also unable to search multiple words at a time in this version. Really disappointing as I'd love to be able to use it on both platforms but I'll be looking elsewhere on Android.

A great dictionary that has been around for a long time. I got this when I lived in Japan in 2009-2011 and it was the only dictionary I needed. I previously used this App on Iphone and it was superb. The free version on Andriod is, to be fair, really poor! I have no problem paying for the upgrade, but woukd like to know if its more that just getting rid of the Ads. For example, can you dump a sentence into the searcher and then click on all the vocab? Overall it's a useful and powerful app when used right. I do recommend paying for the app to remove ads or whatever (honestly, I've had this app so long I forgot what the unpaid version is like). I do have a couple complaints though. One, I'm a former iOS user and that version of the app had the ability to search via written input. This should be included in the android version but instead we can only search via SKIP and radical in addition to standard text. It ought to be simple to allow me to write a kanji on a simulated pad and search that way especially because I could do it on my iPhone 6. Two, viewing stroke orders on the iOS app is simply better. The android version should be brought up to this standard.

I had the app on my iPhone for years before the new update, and I loved it. Five out of five stars. But since the update, the app is wonky, I lost my favorite method of looking up kanji, and the app gets stuck in a feedback loop that makes me have to restart the app to continue looking things up. This app has been my go to Japanese dictionary for over 6 years. This is the only one that I have ever used. I started with it on my iPod touch and now have it on my Android phone. It is indispensable for my Japanese vocabulary and kanji learning. My morning routine involves practicing my vocabulary in with the flashcards in the app. The flashcards are a great way to practice and I really like that they use a system so that the flashcard intervals are spaced out. (The cards that I don't know are shown more often.) Plus, it's the ability to back up all of my cards is essential, which I can do on the app. (There is NO way I want to lose my flashcards.) Finally, the support is great. When I had a question, my email quickly responded to, and I was given helpful advice. That's great to know that the support is there when I need it.

I love this app, but it is not working on PIXEL 3. In addition, it does not work to open right to search. So this adds an extra step on every open. I used this app every day and this is not a good user expereince. In addition, it needs to identify the most common, frequent used words with old words that are not longer used. Most dictionaries do this feature. Otherwise, its a Five star.

I have been using this app for years. It had served me wonderfully, usually always on the quick access area across several phones. I am very, very disappointed at the latest changes that make it super buggy, unresponsive, and quite frustrating to use. It is probably due to the introduction of ads. I was about to purchase the ad-free version, but then I noticed a very rude reply from renzo, inc. to another user complaining about performance (the one that bought the iOS version). I also bought the iOS version many years ago. For now I will be uninstalling, and looking for an alternative. If renzo, inc. fixes their issues and is more polite to their users, I will purchase the ad-free version.

Contains lots of annoying ads. They pop up whenever you use the app, also in the middle of search input. They make sound even if the phone is not in use - I spend more time watching and closing ads than actually using the app, which also is awfully slow. edit: sorry, it's your app, not any other, I paid attention before leaving my review. Ads appear anywhere, even in the middle of typing a word (if they were only when entering the app it'd be fine). If it's some kind of bug I'll try downloading the app again when it has an update and then change the review.
